Heat and older adults

Older adults are at higher risk of getting sick from extreme heat. As we age, our bodies have a harder time adjusting to hot weather. Certain medications can also affect our body’s response to heat.

Help loved ones and neighbors stay safe when it’s hot:

  • Have a designated contact list of people to check in with and reach out to for support.

  • Visit or call daily to make sure they are hydrated and their home temperature is comfortable.

  • Offer to take others someplace cool, like an air-conditioned library, senior center, or mall.

Your #HeatSafeLA Checklist:

  • Close windows before it is hot outside

  • Block out sunlight with curtains, shades, or reflective window films

  • Be aware of any heat advisories

  • Stay hydrated and carry a water bottle when you leave home

  • If it’s very hot, stay indoors as much as possible

  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
